Sunday Feature - Dubmaster's Top 10 Current Animated Shows
When I first thought of making a Sunday feature on cartoons, memories of shows I watched as a kid popped up in my head. You know, shows like teenage mutant hero turtles and Flintstones. Well that nostalgic feature morphed into this one, considering yes I still watch cartoons. These days networks like Fox and Comedy Central have a host of top notch animated shows that are actually targeted at grownups; some are crazy, some are naughty, and some explore mature themes. In all most are highly entertaining, skewing how we view the world of animation.
Today we take a look at the top 10 current adult cartoon shows in the Dubmaster household. Check out the list after the cut, and lets know what your own top 10 are.
Oh and I also love Anime. Theres a plethora of quality Anime for you to discover.
10. The Cleveland Show (Fox)
Although this spin-off of Family Guy isn’t as entertaining it still provides enough laughs. Here Cleveland Brown goes back to his hometown with his son, and marries his high school sweet heart. Along with her two kids they start a new life that’s not so ordinary. The show isn’t much loved apparently but it serves a nice slice of slapstick humour.
Favourite Character – Rallo
9. Allen Gregory (Fox)
First off this show is an acquired taste.
Co-created by actor Jonah Hill, this is a much hated cartoon about a pretentious seven-year-old, Allen Gregory De Longpre (voiced by Jonah Hill) being raised by his father and his father's life partner. I mean I understand that its not for everyone but theres a quirky likability about this show. I think it’s the things that make people hate this series that makes it entertaining to me – dry wit and inappropriate topics. You just want to smack Allen Gregory into the next episode.
Favourite character – Allen Gregory
Oh wait I just heard it got cancelled earlier this month. Erm…
8. Futurama (Fox)
The little show that could. Futurama always reminds me of lazy Sunday mornings at uni. I’ve forgotten what channel it was on. From the creators of The Simpsons, this show is Star Trek on cheap LSD. Ok not quite Star Trek, but with a rambunctious crew of space ship delivery men and crazy adventures in far off planets you can see the comparison no?
Main character Fry accidently gets cryogenically frozen in 1999 and reawakes in 2999, to a future filled with space ships, drunk robots, and aliens. Oh and ‘head-in-a-jar’ historical figures and actors.
Favourite Character – Bender the robot
7. Ugly Americans (Comedy Central)
You may want to sprinkle holy water on this cartoon. Lol. Set in a version of New York you can only find in nightmares this show is chock full of every imaginable monster and science fiction character. The pilot episode features a dinner in Hell. Literally. The funny thing is its not horror at all. Yup. This show is actually about a regular guy working in a government agency and his interactions with his demon boss/girlfriend, wizard colleague, zombie roommate, and a host of zany characters. You may need a morbid sense of humour for this.
Favourite Character – Everyone
6. The Simpsons (Fox)
Shock! Controversy! The Simpsons is not number 1! To be honest I feel these days it isn’t what it used to be. To be honest that’s understandable for a show that has been on air for over 20 years, and has covered almost every topic imaginable from aliens to homosexuality.
Set in the fictional town of Springfield, The Simpsons is a satirical parody of middle class American life, following the Simpson family on their escapades.
Favourite Character - Homer
5. American dad (Fox)
American dad centers on Stan Smith, an extreme right wing CIA agent dealing with family life and keeping America safe. He and his family members turn family life upside down with their crazy antics. Oh and theres a crazy alcoholic cross dressing alien living in their attic!
Favourite Character – Roger the alien
4. Family guy (Fox)
Having been cancelled twice, Family Guy is the definition of a survivor. I don’t know why it was cancelled really as every guy I know loves this show about the dysfunctional Griffin family.
Favourite Character – Stewie of course!
3. Bob’s Burgers (Fox)
Without any real ‘adult’ themes (yet), this is just a fun oddball show for grownups. The belcher family actually resembles an actual family with its different personalities that still somehow gel. I love the dry comedy which may also be its downfall as not everyone gets that, preferring slapstick fare.
Bob’s burgers is about a family running a burger shop.Yup that’s basically it. Lol.
Favourite Character – Louise
2. The boondocks (Cartoon Network)
Created by Aaron McGruder, The Boondocks is a social satire based on his syndicated comic strip of the same name. Underneath the humor, bad language, dope music, and cool artwork, is a show that is a commentary of the current state of African American culture and race relations.
The Boondocks revolves around the lives of the Freeman family: ten-year-old Huey, his younger brother, eight-year-old Riley, and their grandfather, Robert, who moved from the South Side of Chicago, Illinois to the suburb of Woodcrest.
Favourite character - Riley
1. Archer (FX)
My latest favourite show this is. Archer is like a live action show that was drawn over. Well a bonkers live action show with incredulous story lines and situations where the characters experience bodily harm in almost every episode. Now when we say adult this is what we are talking about, with its gun violence, blood, sex and regular de-kitting by the hot agent Lana.
The brilliantly funny show is about the staff, agents and admin, that make up the international spy agency ISIS. Global espionage ends up being the backdrop for this team to get up to hijinxs, insult and mess each other up, particularly for main star, the Don Draper-esque Sterling Archer.
Favourite Character - Sterling Archer is TD (that dude)! A douchebag, but TD regardless.
Honorable Mention - South Park (Comedy Central)
Yes South Park isn’t in my top 10. Back in the earlier seasons this was a show that was both offensive and a lot of fun to watch, with its dark humour and satire. It has made fun of everyone from the devil to Tom Cruise. For me, it seems to be trying too hard these days. Regardless South Park still makes for entertaining stuff.
Favourite character – Ike Broflovski Kyle’s little brother (Lol. I know)
