You probably don't know about The L.A. Complex...yet. This new show about struggling ambitious entertainers (actors, musicians, dancers) living in an apartment complex in...well in L.A., is a Canadian export, courtesy of Much Music. Its some interesting stuff. If like me you aren't in Canada you can check it out on the good old internet, or wait till it comes to The CW this spring.
Pivotal to the show is its music. Every episode so far has been an introduction to artistes I had previously never heard of, and yes some are Canadian. Season 1, Episode 4 saw some elevated tension and emotionial scenes capped beautifully by indie songs. Two tracks stood out to me- 'Mouthful Of Diamonds' by American indie pop duo, Phantogram , and 'Tell Me What To Swallow' by Toronto electronic band, Crystal Castles. Well actually three tracks stood out, but one was performed by Whale Tooth, a band that lives in the complex and I can't find any details about it.
Phantogram - Mouthful Of Diamonds
Crystal Castles - Tell Me What To Swallow
A surprising bonus was this bad ass retro joint from Episode 2. Baby Huey's Hard Times was a perfect backdrop for a heavy scene, with lyrics that were integral to some character 'advancement'. Not dropping any spoilers here, check out the show for yourself.
